Help! It’s My First Time Shopping for Cannabis – A Weed Guide for Newbies

Huzzah! Weed is legal in Washington state. Did you know Washington was one of the first states where weed became legalized for both recreation and medical uses? In fact, we at Dockside Cannabis opened our doors as a medical co-op in 2011. If it’s your first time visiting a cannabis dispensary — congratulations! Dockside Cannabis is here to help you every step of the way! If this isn’t your first weed rodeo, that’s all well and fine too, there’s always something new to learn when it comes to cannabis. When shopping in a cannabis retail environment, there are a few things you will want to know before you visit. Let’s get started!

Dockside has four locations in Seattle to conveniently serve you. You must be 21 years or older and provide a valid government issued ID to shop with us. We’re a cash only establishment but we have ATMs available inside each location. While we do offer online ordering through our website, we highly recommend having a conversation with one of our knowledgeable budtenders, especially if it’s your first time visiting!

There are a few things you’ll want to consider when shopping for cannabis. First, what is your reason for consuming cannabis? Is it to get high and binge a new hit show? Are you looking for pain relief? Maybe you’re seeking creative inspiration, help sleeping, managing anxiety or stress? Are you okay with the psychoactive effects that often come with THC consumption or will you prefer to stay clear headed with CBD?

Next, consider the following: there are limits to how much cannabis you can purchase. The amount an individual is allowed to possess at once is:

  • 7 grams of cannabis concentrates or extract such as tincture, shatter, wax or oil
  • 16 grams of cannabis infused solid edibles
  • 1 ounce of cannabis flower or loose herb
  • 72 grams of infused liquid edibles
  • There’s no limit on paraphernalia!

Dockside is here to meet you where you are. Our budtenders want you to have a good time regardless of your cannabis experience level, so take advantage of their know-how. Share your expectations with them so they can recommend a strain or product that will be the best fit for you. Get the conversation going with your budtender by asking about:

  1. Duration. How long do you want to feel high?
  2. Preferred method of consumption. Smoke, vape, dab, edible or tincture.
  3. Desired effects. What effects are you hoping to experience? Examples include: euphoric, creative, energized, sedated, focused, relaxed.
  4. Set & Setting. What time of day do you plan to consume cannabis? What activities do you plan on pairing it with?
  5. Terpenes. Terpenes are oils in cannabis that give strains distinctly different smells, but do you know how they play a role in the effects you feel from strain to strain? Read more on our blog: Why Terpenes Matter.

Finally, you’ll need a safe place to consume your newly purchased cannabis products. In Washington state per Washington state cannabis laws, you are allowed to consume cannabis on private property only. It is illegal to consume cannabis in public, inside a motor vehicle, or on any federally owned property including many parks and visitor attractions, so plan ahead!
